About "Us"

Rebecca and I on our trip to the year 1926; shortly afterwards our time machine broke, and we sold the parts to a bicycle shop.

Singlesaints.com is owned and operated by me, Randy Tayler. My wife Rebecca used to handle a lot, too, but is now much more occupied taking care of our two girls, ages 5 and 2. So I'm now taking full credit for Singlesaints, and she gets full credit for the family.

I started Singlesaints back in 1999 with a very weak business plan, and very junior-level web programming skillz. I built it with a crappy flat-file system of my own creation in Perl. Then, in 2001, I was introduced to PHP and MySQL, and made the switch to a real database, giving the site an overhaul in the process.

I still didn't have much of a business plan, however, and ended up blowing an absurd amount of money on lousy radio ads. Oops! But people were meeting on the site, and I think we had our first actual marriage that year. There have been many more since, but I don't always get apprised of the nuptials.

As my finances fluctuated (as I worked various jobs), I went from charging for membership to making membership free, then back to charging, then back to free. (The cycle may have repeated itself more than that. I honestly can't remember.) Now we're free, and I don't see us leaving the free-membership-model any time soon.

In 2003, I updated the site again, but still tried to design it on my own. This was a mistake, of course, as I'm not only color-blind, but also design-stupid. This latest version of the site, aptly dubbed 4.0, was mostly designed by Brian Jackson, a fellow BYU alum.

By June of 2007, I think I had spent a total of $20,000 on the site in advertising and hosting. I'd also put in innumerable hours. I earned back maybe a couple thousand when I was charging, so I'm putting my net loss at $15,000. Live and learn, eh? Hopefully, my current business plan will allow me to make some better money on the site, maybe letting me break even by the end of 2009.

As for my side projects, I perform on occasion with ComedySportz Provo, do some writing here and there, and live in our comfortable home here in Orem, Utah.
